There are three types of CBD products you'll commonly hear about: CBD isolate infused products which are made with pure isolated Cannabidiol; full spectrum products, which contain the entirety of the source materials cannabinoid and terpene profile, including a federally legal level of 0.3% THC; and broad-spectrum CBD products that contain a full spectrum of the plant's cannabinoid and terpene profile with NO detectable levels of THC. 

Popular CBD Extraction Methods: How It Works

To make a premium product, CBD must be extracted and preserved from the hemp plant—but this takes precision and care. While there are several CBD extraction methods, here are the most common ones:

Solvent Extraction

As named, this extraction requires the help of a solvent, whether food grade ethanol or hydrocarbon (propane, butane, etc.). The solvent is steeped or rinsed over plant trimming, which extracts the desired compounds. 

If using a hydrocarbon solvent, the mixture extracted will contain the cannabinoids and other useful compounds. Lastly, the majority of the solvent is removed, leaving a pure, concentrated CBD oil. The refinement method, however, will depend on the desired end product.  

With the help of ethanol extraction, the liquid is then distilled to separate the hemp oil from the food-grade ethanol and to isolate the desired compounds further.  

Pros & Cons

Solvent extraction is an efficient and fairly inexpensive method. Hydrocarbons are also well-known for preserving the plant’s flavor aroma—which means more quality product and higher potency. Best of all, it won’t require specialized equipment that most extraction processes use.

The downside? Due to the volatile nature of solvents, this method can be dangerous and must be handled with extreme caution. Additionally, residual solvent can get left in the final product or give the product an unpleasant taste if not extracted meticulously. 

CO2 Extraction

And then there’s CO2 extraction. 

This scientifically-backed method is quite interesting and consists typically of three chambers. 

CO2, carbon dioxide, is applied to the hemp plant to extract cannabinoids and other desirable compounds. The first chamber contains the CO2 in a gaseous state, which will convert to a liquid state. This is done by increasing the pressure and decreasing the temperature. Next, both pressure and temperature are slowly increased until the liquid reaches the “supercritical” point. 

Now for the fascinating part—once the temperature is increased, the CO2 will reside somewhere between a liquid state and a gaseous state. This way, it retains the properties of each: the CO2 will be concentrated like a liquid and expand like gas. 

Once CO2 reaches its optimal state, it is then moved to a second chamber. This chamber contains the hemp plant material. CO2 will travel through the hemp and separate the oil and its desired compounds from the plant material. Finally, we get to the third chamber, where the CO2 and oil fully separates, and the residual CO2 evaporates. This leaves you with a highly concentrated CBD oil extract.
